COLUMBUS, Ohio (WSYX) — Canton, Ohio, will be home to the “Super Bowl of Flag Football Championships” this weekend. That is how former Heisman winner and NFL quarterback Robert Griffin III calls it.
For the first time ever, ESPN and ABC are broadcasting the NFL Flag Football Championships this weekend. RGIII will join three-time Super Bowl Champion Tedy Bruschi as a part of the broadcast crew.
“The NFL is very excited about this, ESPN is very invested in this, and when I got the call, it was a no-brainer for me,” said Griffin III.
The tournament runs from July 19-21 and will feature talented flag football players from across the country, with two international division games. Fifteen games from each tournament will be featured across ESPN, Disney, and NFL platforms, with the 15U boys’ championship at 3 p.m. on Sunday on ABC/ESPN and the 18U girls’ championship at 4 p.m.
“I want to be able to tell these athletes stories to the masses because they’re going to be at a big stage in about four years. Many of them will be playing flag football at the college level as well. I’m very excited about it,” said RGIII.
Flag football is one of the fastest-growing sports across the country and the world.
According to the International Federation of American Football, 2.4 million kids under the age of 17 are playing organized football in the U.S. The organization has seen an increase in participation globally. Flag football will also be included in the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
