With December underway, the college football season is entering a period that presents fans (and bettors) with an interesting lineup of bowl games — and bowl names.

Remember the Poulan/Weed Eater Independence Bowl in the 1990s? That  game in Shreveport, Louisiana, now is the Radiance Technologies Independence Bowl.

This year, all eyes will be on the first-ever 12-team major college playoff, leading to the national championship game on Jan. 20 in Atlanta.

But 36 non-playoff bowls also round out this season’s college football schedule. The matchups have not been set, though ESPN has posted a story naming potential contenders in all games.

Some bowl names might require a Google search to learn exactly what the sponsor does (which probably is the point). Others just seem fun, like a cricket celebration that has nothing to do with wireless services. (On a serious note, the bowl celebrates “the heritage, legacy, pageantry and tradition of Historically Black Colleges and Universities.”)

At least one bowl game conjures up an intriguing taste combination (Cheez-It, Citrus), while grocery shoppers might say another bowl is perfectly paired with its stadium name (Idaho potatoes, Albertsons).
