Former US Open champion Gabriela Sabatini is barely recognisable in her latest holiday snaps, years after retiring from the tennis world. The Argentine star, who clinched her only Grand Slam title at the US Open in 1990, was once romantically linked to Donald Trump.
Sabatini was a familiar face on the tennis circuit during the late 80s and 90s, often coming close but falling short at the Grand Slam tournaments. The 1988 Olympic silver medalist made it to four Australian Open semifinals, five French Open semifinals between 1985 and 1994, and the Wimbledon final in 1991 reaching her peak world ranking as No.3 in 1989.
Her victory in New York cemented her place in tennis history, just months after she was thrust into the public eye due to her relationship with Trump.
Since hanging up her racket in 1996 at the tender age of 26 due to a stomach injury, Sabatini has stayed connected to the sport, regularly attending events and even participating in an exhibition match at Flushing Meadows this year.
Recent posts on Sabatini’s Instagram show her soaking up the atmosphere at the US Open, Wimbledon and the Italian Open in Rome. Her latest snaps away from the court see her dressed to the nines on the streets of Wimbledon before making her way to the All-England Lawn Club.
The 54-year-old tennis legend Sabatini has also been romantically linked with fellow tennis star Juan Martin Del Potro, who also clinched the US Open in 2009. Despite being 18 years younger than Sabatini, the pair share a mutual love for their sport and have been pictured together on her social media platforms.
In her youth, Sabatini had a brief romantic liaison with Trump when she was just 19 years old in 1989, while Trump was 43. It is reported that Trump was taking a break from his future second wife Marla Maples at the time.
However, Trump reportedly ended their romance and reunited with Maples, while divorcing his first wife Ivana the following year.
Sabatini’s successful tennis career earned her a reported £6.7million and legendary status in her homeland of Argentina. In her hometown of Buenos Aires, Sabatini is honoured with a statue alongside football greats Lionel Messi and Diego Maradona.
The highlight of her career was in New York when she defeated Steffi Graf in a straight sets final. Since her early retirement, Sabatini has remained active in the sporting scene as an avid cyclist and frequent guest at matches of her favourite football team, Argentine giants River Plate.
She recently shared a picture on Instagram flaunting her toned abs, proving she’s still in fantastic shape.
