Daniel Jones is fighting for his NFL future.
Once the No. 6 overall pick of the 2019 draft, Jones has a huge $160 million contract but doesn’t have the pro wins to back it up.
With the New York Giants viewed as a team that could trade up in the upcoming draft to select a quarterback, some fans have already moved on from Jones as the starting QB with the Giants.
Other fans are just trying to figure out what happened to the sixth-year QB’s eyes in a media interview.
While it could have been a unique Zoom setting or a camera trick, Jones went viral due to his constantly shifting eyes.
“Why does he look like that?” one fan posted. “Is there something wrong with his eyes?”
“AI (artificial intelligence) has gone too far,” a second fan joked.
“Why his eyes so big?” a third fan wrote.
Other fans remembered a New York connection.
Former Jets head coach Adam Gase had an infamous press conference in 2019 when he took over New York’s other NFL team.
For years, Gase’s eyes were constantly referred to on social media.
After Jones went viral during his interview, some internet sleuths recalled Gase’s own viral moment.
“Adam Gase eyes,” one fan said.
“Bro was with Adam Gase,” a second fan posted.
“Adam Gase’s son,” a third fan joked.
Gase went 9-23 in two seasons with the Jets and hasn’t been an NFL head coach since.
Jones is 22-36-1 as a starter with 12,512 passing yards, a 64.3 completion percentage, 62 touchdowns and 40 interceptions.
In 2022, he went 9-6-1 while New York won a playoff game.
Last year, Jones went 1-5 before suffering a season-ending ACL injury.
Now, New York could draft Drake Maye or J.J. McCarthy at QB as Jones’ replacement, while fans are focused on his viral eyes.
If Jones leads the Giants back to the playoffs in 2024, no one will remember his odd-looking April press conference in January.
