I’ve never been one to snub big tourist hotspots.
They’re popular for a reason, and more often than not, they really do live up to the hype.
But there comes a time in every traveler’s life when you just want to experience something different and more authentic, preferably away from the overwhelming crowds.
The only catch is that places like these are so rarely talked about that you might struggle to find them in the first place.
That’s why today we’re taking a look at the latest report released by American Express on the world’s trendiest destinations – places that offer a lot to the average tourist without any of the drawbacks of bigger, flashier hubs.
People like to call Macao (or Macau) the “Las Vegas of the East” and, frankly, that rubs me the wrong way because the Chinese gem is something else altogether.
Sure, all the luxury casinos and resorts might give off a similar vibe at first, but the region’s centuries-old heritage, impeccable cuisine, and artistic flair are incomparable.
Here, you can still spend plenty of time indulging in the uninhibited fun of high-end resorts like The Venetian or Wynn Palace while also taking in Macao’s historic center – the most perfect blend of Chinese and Portuguese cultures you’ve ever seen.
The iconic Ruins of St. Paul’s and the A-Ma Temple, in particular, are must-sees.
And don’t even get me started on the food; just thinking about minchi (or minchee) and Portuguese egg tarts has me itching to book a ticket to Macao ASAP.
I know Koh Samui isn’t exactly unknown – as Thailand’s second-largest island and a beachy paradise, it’s been drawing in flocks of tourists for decades now – but it still is wildly underrated.
It looks like that’s about to change, though.
More and more people are taking note of the luxurious yet still reasonably priced resorts, postcard-looking coastline, buzzing nightlife, and surprisingly rich cultural scene.
Your days here can be spent lounging around Chaweng Beach or taking in the views of Wat Phra Yai, whereas at night, you’ll take in the island’s unparalleled nightlife, complete with iconic clubs like ARKbar and The Green Mango.
We’re heading off to South Africa now, where you’ll find a charming town famous for its world-class wine.
Surrounded almost exclusively by mountains and vineyards, Franschhoek provides some much-needed respite from the noise and chaos of other hotspots (including the ones we’ve talked about so far).
And if you’re a foodie, consider your next destination picked.
Not only is Franschhoek home to some of the best wineries in the entire world (think La Motte and Boschendal), but it’s also a thriving culinary hub with clear French influences and a gourmet dining scene.
La Petite Colombe, in particular, is unmissable.
You’ve probably dreamed about going to France a hundred times by now, but have you actually added Brittany to your bucket list?
If not, you’re missing out on a lot.
The rugged northwestern region might not have the same stellar reputation as the Southern Riviera, but it has all of the untouched beaches, charming villages, and mouth-watering crepes you’ve been dreaming of.
Here, you’ll also get to experience a unique Celtic heritage that’s unlike anything else you’ll see in the country, bringing an air of uniqueness to what would otherwise be just one of the many, many French trips you see plastered all over Instagram.
Get comfy – we’re traveling all the way to Australia for the No. 1 pick!
Again, this isn’t one of those unheard-of places you can’t even remotely place on a map, but it still doesn’t get the recognition it deserves.
With its booming cultural scene highlighted by fascinating hubs like the Queensland Art Gallery and Gallery of Modern Art (QAGOMA), trendy yet inviting culinary experiences, and proximity to the Gold Coast, Brisbane truly checks all the boxes when it comes to finding that perfect fun-yet-still-authentic destination.
