How was Nick Dunlap planning to spend his Saturday night while sitting on the lead in a PGA Tour event, as an amateur?
“Probably turn off my phone,” the 20-year-old said after his third-round 60 that gave him a three-shot lead. “My girlfriend just landed, so go hang out with her, do some laundry. I’m still trying to figure out this whole two-weeks-on-the-road-laundry-thing with the Tour. So, I’ll probably go do that, and get a nice dinner and try to get some sleep.”
Earlier on Golf Channel, after shooting 60 to grab a three-shot lead at the American Express, Dunlap joked he might dine at the Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse next to his hotel. Not bad for a college sophomore.
“I went from riding in the back of a Sprinter van at Alabama to, I’m driving an X5 around the whole week. It’s freezing cold [in Alabama], and I’m out here playing in perfect conditions and great golf courses.”
If you think Dunlap is spending some of his expected winnings this week? Think again.
Despite winning the American Express Sunday, becoming the first amateur in 33 years to win on the PGA Tour, Dunlap won’t earn a penny from the event. His winner’s share will go to runner-up Christiaan Bezuidenhout. However, he probably has boatloads of NIL money coming his way.
Of course, there are 67 other pros who made the cut and will benefit from Dunlap’s status.
Here is a complete list of the 2024 American Express payouts for all 68 players who made the cut. The total purse is $8.4 million.
