A promising career for Aaron Hernandez resulted in fame and, ultimately, a fall into tragedy. His life will now be showcased as the first entry of the “Sports Story” series on FX.
“American Sports Story” is a sports anthology series crafted by Stu Zicherman following the success of “The People vs. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story,” which garnered nine Emmys, two Golden Globes, and four Critics’ Choice Television Awards.
Hernandez was a national champion with the Florida Gators and a 2010 NFL Draft pick of the Patriots. The series looks into his life, from football to the timeline of events that led to him being charged with the murder of Odin Lloyd and being found dead in his prison cell in 2017.
Josh Andres Rivera of “West Side Story” and “The Hunger Games” fame will play Hernandez. Patrick Schwarzenegger will play college teammate Tim Tebow, while Norbert Leo Butz plays Bill Belichick.
The show, produced by six-time Emmy Award winner Ryan Murphy, “explores the disparate strands of his identity, his family, his career, his suicide, and their legacy in sports and American culture.” It is based on the podcast “Gladiator: Aaron Hernandez and Football Inc.” from The Boston Globe and Wondery.
