Perhaps the New England Patriots‘ most controversial player of all time, Aaron Hernandez, is having his story told in an FX miniseries this fall.
The ten-episode miniseries entitled “American Sports Story: Aaron Hernandez” plans to retell the tragic rise and fall of the late tight end, according to the show’s webpage on the FX website. The show is set to premiere on Sept. 17, 2024.
The trailer for the miniseries has garnered over five million views on Youtube.
“The first installment of FX’s American Sports Story is based on the podcast Gladiator: Aaron Hernandez and Football Inc. from The Boston Globe and Wondery,” the webpage says. “The 10-episode limited series charts the rise and fall of NFL superstar Aaron Hernandez and explores the disparate strands of his identity, his family, his career, his suicide and their legacy in sports and American culture.”
Josh Andrés Rivera is playing Aaron Hernandez in “American Sports Story: Aaron Hernandez”
Rivera is most known for his role as Chino in Steven Spielberg’s rendition of “West Side Story.”
The first two episodes of the miniseries will be available to watch on FX at 10 p.m. on Sept. 17. They will also be available to stream on Hulu.
Yes, Tom Brady did play with Hernandez from 2010 to 2012 on the Patriots.
After Hernandez was charged with first-degree murder in 2013, coach Bill Belichick forbade the Patriots from ever speaking of Hernandez, Dane Fletcher recounted in the Globe’s Spotlight coverage of the Hernandez story.
While he was incarcerated, Hernandez wrote in a letter he felt closest to Brady during his time on the team, according to CBS News reporting.
Seven years after his death, several jokes were made at Hernandez’s expense during Brady’s Netflix roast concerning the former player’s suicide and his 2013 killing of Odin Lloyd.
Shayanna Jenkins, Hernandez’s fiancée, would respond to the jokes, telling TMZ that she was disheartened by the jabs and asked people to consider that while the man may be dead, his daughter is alive and can still be hurt by such harsh words.
