The event series premieres September 17 on FX, and will stream onHulu. The limited event series consists of 10 episodes, and chronicles the rise and fall of NFL superstar Aaron Hernandez, who played tight end for The New England Patriots alongside Tom Brady until his violent nature led him to murder.
The series explores the disparate strands of his identity, his family, his career, his arrest, and his legacy in sports and American culture. 29-year-old Josh Rivera plays Aaron Hernandez in the series, which begins with his time in high school, his college football career, and his three seasons in the NFL with the New England Patriots, from 2010 through 2012. The series will explore Hernandez’s violent upbringing, his volatile personality, and his struggles with his sexuality. Finally, the series will detail the murder of Odin Lloyd and Hernandez’s subsequent conviction, and the shocking twist after his incarceration.

Rivera is best known for his roles as Chino in Steven Spielberg’s 2021 remake of West Side Story and as Sejanus Plinth in the 2023 prequel The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes. His other credits include Vegas High, Sugar Baby, and Cat Person. Ryan Murphy’s hugely popular FX American franchise has explored the darker aspects of the human psyche, beginning with his American Horror Story anthology series, which began in 2011 and has run 12 seasons so far. His American Crime Story series premiered in 2016 and has run three seasons, featuring the O.J. Simpson trial, the murder of Gianni Versace, and the Clinton/Lewinsky sex scandal. American Sports Story was created by Stuart Zicherman, who served as a consulting producer on The Americans, The Affair, The Shrink Next Door, and Alaska Daily.
Aaron Hernandez rose to fame as a member of the Florida Gators, winning the 2009 BCS National Championship alongside Florida quarterback Tim Tebow. His violent reputation and involvement in scandalous incidents off the field led to his stock falling in the 2010 NFL Draft. The Patriots eventually drafted him in the fourth round and, despite some behavior issues, he became a sports superstar. In June 2013, Hernandez was arrested and indicted on first degree murder charges in the death of Odin Lloyd earlier in the month. He was later convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison without parole.
