Two-Minute Drill: Florida Panthers play for Stanley Cup; FSU, UF in CWS
The Florida Panthers are in the Stanley Cup Finals for the second year in a row, plus Florida, FSU still have College World Series title hopes.
Former NFL running back Clinton Portis’ Gainesville home was sold at auction Tuesday for $370,700.
The 8,000-square-foot purple mansion was foreclosed because of roughly $1.6 million in unpaid principal, interest, insurance and taxes.
Portis has been dealing with financial issues for more than a decade. How did he get here?
Portis was a star player for Gainesville High School before playing with the University of Miami, where he played on the undefeated 2001 national championship team.
He was drafted by the NFL’s Denver Broncos the next year. He played nine total seasons in the NFL.
ESPN reported in 2004 that Portis signed an eight-year deal with Washington worth up to $50.6 million, making him the NFL’s highest paid running back at the time. Portis last played in 2010 but officially retired in August 2012.
According to overthecap.com, Portis earned $48,544,750 during his career.
Portis played for three years at the University of Miami. He had 838 yards and eight touchdowns during his freshman season. Injuries limited him in his second season with Portis playing eight games with 485 yards and two touchdowns.
Portis shined in his third year, amassing 12 touchdowns and 1,200 yards. He also had 12 receptions for 125 yards and 1 touchdown. The Hurricanes won the National title that year.
Portis was drafted by the Denver Broncos with the 51st overall pick in the second round of the 2002 NFL draft.
Portis played for nine seasons in the NFL. His first two seasons were spent with the Denver Broncos. He ran for 1,508 yards his first season. He ran for 1,591 his second season.
On Dec. 15, 2002, Portis became the youngest player (21 years, 105 days) to score four touchdowns in a game in a 31–24 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs. The next season on Dec. 7, 2003, Portis became the youngest player (22 years, 97 days) to score five touchdowns in a game in a 45–27 victory, which also happened against Kansas City.
Before the 2004 season, the Broncos traded Portis to the Washington Redskins for cornerback Champ Bailey and a second-round draft pick in the 2004 NFL Draft. Washington signed Portis to an eight-year, $50.5 million contract.
He would never find the success he had in Denver, but did gain 1,487 yards in 2008.
He totaled 9,923 yards in nine season, including 3,099 in Denver and 6,824 in Washington. He scored 75 rushing touchdowns and five receiving.
Portis’ recent struggles include a federal tax lien of about $246,000, the bulk of which — about $219,000 — is from tax years 2014 through 2016, and assessed in August 2019.
Portis first filed for bankruptcy in 2015 with many of his listed debts the same as the June 2023 filing. The 2015 filing also included a $500,000 debt to his mother, Rhonnel Hearn, and $412,000 in child support payments. He reported at the time a monthly income of $7,500 and average monthly expenses of $12,800.
Portis’ problems continued in 2019, as he was among a handful of former NFL players accused of health care fraud. He was charged with stealing nearly $100,000 by filing false reimbursement claims for medical equipment through the NFL’s Gene Upshaw NFL Player Health Reimbursement Account Plan, a fund used to help retired players pay for medical expenses.
Portis’ first trial in the case ended in a hung jury. He then agreed to plead guilty as part of a deal with prosecutors and was sentenced in January 2022 to six months in federal prison and six months house arrest. He could have been sentenced to up to 10 years in prison had he been convicted at trial.
He has maintained his innocence despite his guilty plea.
As for his Gainesville home, Bank of New York Mellon, the plaintiff in the 2019 foreclosure case against Portis and his mother, took ownership of the more than 8,000-square-foot purple mansion at 3510 NE 156th Ave., and sold it Tuesday with a winning bid of $370,700.
