Despite being in the twilight of her competitive journey, Danielle Collins has been performing brilliantly on the tour this season. After winning back-to-back titles in Miami and Charleston, the American tennis star has now secured a place in the semifinals of the Italian Open. In doing so, the 30-year-old player has now joined her compatriot and the ‘Queen of the Court’ Serena Williams on an elite ‘WTA-1000’ list.
Apart from the Italian Open, Collins also reached the semifinals of this season’s hard-court WTA 1000 event in Miami. She has now become the second American player after Serena Williams to pull off this rare WTA-1000 clay and hard court feat on the tour. Notably, the official Twitter page of OptaAce recently hailed Collins by stating, “Danielle Collins is the 4th player to make the semi-finals on both surfaces (clay & hard) in WTA-1000 events during the same season after turning 30 along with Serena Williams, Li Na and Svetlana Kuznetsova. The user stated, “Danielle Collins is the oldest player to win 15 consecutive WTA tour-level matches since Serena Williams in 2015.”
