Kamala Harris has reportedly called Donald Trump to congratulate him on his victory in the 2024 US election.
A senior Harris aide said the vice president stressed the ‘importance of a peaceful transfer of power and being a president for all Americans’ during the call, according to CBS news.
Harris had planned to hold an election party at Howard University, a historically black college in Washington D.C.
The university is her alma mater but the crowds started to leave when they realised there were no plans for the Democratic nominee to speak.
Despite this, she is expected to address crowds at the university at some point later today and concede the election, after being beaten convincingly by Trump last night.
Because Harris did not arrive for a victory speech, it is assumed she is at the vice president’s official residence at the Naval Observatory in Washington D.C.
It is assumed that she will leave her residency at some point today and then make her way to Howard University.
The Naval Observatory has been the official residence of the vice president of the United States since the 1970s.
It was also established in 1830 and is the country’s scientific and military facility that produces geopositioning, navigation and timekeeping data for the United States Navy and Department of Defense.
Despite Trump winning the election, Kamala Harris has not yet conceded defeat.
Cedric Richmond, the co-chair of the Harris campaign said: ‘We will continue overnight to fight to make sure that every vote is counted. That every voice has spoken.
‘So you won’t hear from the vice president tonight, but you will hear from her tomorrow. She will be back here tomorrow.’
If Harris had won she would have been the first sitting vice president to win the presidency in 36 years.
She would also have been the first woman, black woman, and person of South Asian descent to serve as the president.
On the flipside, Trump said the Republicans had ‘taken back control of the Senate’ and that ‘America has given us an unprecedented and powerful mandate’.
He spoke to his supporters at his victory speech in West Palm Beach, Florida, earlier today.
Trump was also joined on stage by his wife Melania, children and campaign support staff – all of whom have been noticeably absent throughout the election campaign.
Supporters could be heard chanting ‘USA, USA, USA’ as he prepared to speak.
The first state to declare Trump winner was Kentucky at 12am UK time.
Other states then soon followed including Indiana, West Virginia, Mississippi, Alabama and Oklahoma.
The first sign the election had tipped in his favour was when he won Florida – a state with a large number of Electoral College votes.
