NBC has secured the rights to another NFL game in December.

The network will air a Week 16 matchup in the afternoon of Saturday, December 21 — while televising three College Football Playoff (CFP) clashes that same day.

That’s in addition to NBC’s Sunday Night Football primetime game on Sunday, December 22.

“We’re excited to work with our partners at the NFL to acquire an additional game for NBCUniversal platforms at a crucial point in the playing season,” NBC Sports president Rick Cordella said in a statement.

“With two NFL games in exclusive windows on the last December weekend before the holidays, we continue to deliver for our owned-stations, affiliates and partners.”

NBC will present NFL games on both Saturday and Sunday for the first time since 1997.

The Saturday matchup will air on NBC, Peacock, and Telemundo.

The announcement comes as the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) is expanding the postseason to 12 teams this fall.

The tournament will kick off on December 20 instead of around New Year’s Day, as has traditionally been the case.

That will put CFP games competing for viewers with the final three rounds of the NFL regular season.

The two sports entities have been trying to avoid scheduling clashes.

But the CFP expansion will make it all the more difficult to achieve, as shown by NBC’s programming plans on December 21.

“I’m not sure it changes much what we do, we’ve been in those windows traditionally,” told Awful Announcing.

“I mean, we’ve always just, regardless of the competition, put the strongest games [on], now, it’s not changing.

“You know, so we can’t control what they do.

“We’ve had a long history of sort of working with them.

“But I think they probably see that they have limited windows to play on Saturday, which is their choice.

“And we were like, we’re still going to do what we do.”

The NFL reportedly hoped that the CFP would move one of the Saturday games to Friday, but it appears unlikely to happen, per Puck News.

The NFL will reveal the 2024 season schedule on Wednesday, May 15.

But it’s been announced that the campaign will kick off with the Kansas City Chiefs hosting the Baltimore Ravens in an AFC Championship rematch on Thursday, September 5.

NBC will broadcast the blockbuster clash.

Also, it’s been confirmed that the Philadelphia Eagles will face the Green Bay Packers in Brazil in Week 1.
