American Football is among the rare sports that are slowly gaining a foothold in Kenya and in other African states.
In order to grow and expand the game in the country, 11 new coaches have undergone extensive training to equip them with skills and knowledge to take the discipline to the next level.
The tacticians undertook the inaugural and rigorous Level One Tackle Certification program at the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) in Juja.
This groundbreaking initiative, sanctioned by the Kenya Federation of American Football (KFAF) in partnership with JKUAT and the Touchdown Sports, was conducted by renowned American coach Harrison Baxter.
Baxter, who also doubles as an international speaker, equipped the participants with foundational skills in the game and the knowledge crucial for coaching the sport.
The training included essential techniques, game strategies, and player safety protocols that ensured the new coaches are well-prepared to nurture and develop local talent.
While expressing his optimism about the training impact on the future of the sport in the country, KFAF President George Alwanga underlined: “Coach Baxter, with his extensive experience and dedication to the sport, provided invaluable insights and hands-on training.
“His involvement not only elevated the program’s quality but also inspired confidence among the participants.
“This certification is a significant step towards elevating the standard of American football in Kenya. We believe that the well-trained coaches will lead to better-prepared players, enhancing the overall quality and competitiveness of the game.”
To KFAF, the benefits of the program extend beyond the individual coaches trained as the exercise represents a strategic investment in the future of the sport in Kenya.
“By establishing a standard of excellence in coaching, KFAF aims to foster a more competitive and sustainable environment for American football.
“Moreover, this initiative is expected to attract more interest and participation in American football across Kenya. With certified coaches at the helm, the sport is poised for growth at both grassroots and competitive levels,” Alwanga added.
