(Gray News) – NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell is sharing some insight into a few changes the league could possibly see in the future.
Goodell shared he would like to see fewer preseason games while moving to 18 regular-season games with the Super Bowl on Presidents Day weekend.
Goodell appeared on “The Pat McAfee Show” Friday and shared his forward-looking thoughts regarding the league.
“I think we’re good at 17 now,” Goodell said. “But … I’m not a fan of the preseason. The reality is, I’d rather replace a preseason game with a regular-season game any day. That’s just picking quality. If we get to 18 and two, that’s not an unreasonable thing.”
The additional regular-season game could result in a second bye week being added, which would lengthen the regular season.
The NFL commissioner said the extension of the season would then move the Super Bowl to Presidents Day weekend with festivities built around the game on Sunday night.
“That ends up on Presidents Day weekend, which is a three-day weekend, which makes the game Sunday night, and you have Monday off,” Goodell said.
According to the league, changes to the length of the season would need to be collectively bargained with the NFL Players Association, and ESPN reports there have been no official steps taken toward any of the potential changes just yet.
Goodell has been in Detroit this week for the NFL draft where the first round opened with the Chicago Bears picking USC quarterback Caleb Williams.
Detroit set an attendance record with 275,000 fans attending the first round of the draft and another 230,000 on the second day, as reported by The Associated Press.
