The Kansas City Chiefs are releasing defensive tackle Isaiah Buggs, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.
The move comes after Buggs was first arrested in May on two misdemeanor warrants alleging animal cruelty. He was then taken into custody on June 16 on a domestic violence/burglary charge.
The 27-year-old had been out on bond following his May arrest. A judge ordered his bond to be revoked in the wake of his most recent arrest.
According to The Athletic’s Alex Andrejev and Mark Puleo, police and animal control officers in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, discovered two dogs who had been left on a back porch at a home Buggs had rented and recently moved out of. Neither dog had access to food or water, and one of the dogs, a pit bull, was later euthanized at a nearby animal shelter.
Trey Robinson, Buggs’ agent, denied the animal-related allegations against his client to The Athletic.
Regarding the most recent arrest, Lukas Weese of The Athletic reported Buggs allegedly broke into the apartment belonging to the mother of his child on June 16. Tuscaloosa police alleged he dragged Yamya Johnson down the stairs.
Buggs was a sixth-round draft pick of the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2019. He spent three seasons with the team before signing with the Detroit Lions in 2022.
The Chiefs signed Buggs to their practice squad ahead of their Week 18 win over the Los Angeles Chargers in January. He didn’t suit up in that game or in any of Kansas City’s four playoff contests.
The reigning Super Bowl champions brought him back on a reserve/future contract before choosing to waive him.
