Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz both shared messages to congratulate Jannik Sinner after the Italian won the 2024 US Open. 

Sinner delivered a high-level performance to down Taylor Fritz 6-3, 6-4, 7-5 in the US Open championship match in Arthur Ashe Stadium.

The world No 1 broke the big-serving American six times as he improved his perfect record in finals in 2024 to 6-0.

The Italian is now a two-time Grand Slam champion after he won his maiden major at the Australian Open in January.

In a post shared on his social media accounts after his triumph, Sinner expressed his love for tennis and his appreciation for the support he has received.

“Incredibly special to win my second slam title here after a great two weeks. Thank you for all the support, it means so much,” the 23-year-old wrote.

“I love this sport and it means everything to me, time to enjoy this moment with my team and my family before we get back to work for the end of the year. The work never stops, we keep pushing.”

Djokovic congratulated his young rival by commenting: “Bravoooo Jannik.”

The 37-year-old Serbian also applauded Sinner’s achievement on his Instagram story by writing “Congratulazioni”.

In another post, Djokovic praised Fritz for reaching his maiden Grand Slam final.

“Well done on a great tournament and first Grand Slam final,” the 24-time Grand Slam winner wrote.

Alcaraz, Sinner’s other main rival, also congratulated the Italian on his Instagram story by writing: “Congratulations Jannik Sinner! You deserve it! Enjoy the moment!”

The 21-year-old Spanish star split the Grand Slam titles with Sinner this season, having triumphed at the French Open and Wimbledon to take his overall major tally to four.

Alcaraz and Djokovic suffered shock early exits in back-to-back days at the US Open, having lost to Botic van de Zandschulp and Alexei Popyrin in the second and third round respectively.

In his post-tournament press conference, Sinner spoke of how he and Alcaraz push each other.

“It’s nice to see for the sport to see some new champions. The new generation, we push each other, trying to improve,” said the world No 1.

“Then obviously there are a lot of players who we first have to beat to play against the best players in the world. There are a couple of upsets lately. Just trying to stay focused on my own path.”
