TULSA, Okla. – San Diego Men’s Tennis swept the ITA All-American Championships singles and doubles titles Sunday, as Oliver Tarvet and Stian Klaassen became the first male student-athletes clinch All-American status this year.
 
It is the first time that a Torero has won a title at the event. Tarvet, a junior and the No. 3 ranked player in college tennis, became the just the fifth player to win both the singles and doubles title at the season’s first big national tournament, the first since 2015.
 
“I couldn’t have imagined a better start to the season for the Toreros,” said Assistant Coach Alex Funkhouser, who was on the sidelines guiding the pair all week. “What these two guys have accomplished on a national scale is nothing short of impressive and deserved. The success is a reflection of the culture and environment that Head Coach Ryan Keckley has established here at USD.”
 
Tarvet, a St. Albans, England started the morning with an effortless walkover title after Sebastian Gorzny of Texas retired from the final due to injury. He advanced from the semifinal on a walkover, too.
 
Klaassen, who hails from Zeist, Netherlands, combined with Tarvet to make the national 23^rd-ranked duo. In the afternoon they defeated the scorching hot Baylor duo Marko Miladniovic and Oskar Brostrom Poulsen, 7-6 (7-4), 2-6, [10-5].
 
En route to the singles final Tarvet won each of his first four matches in straight sets against ranked opponents and has won 50 of 70 games played. He advanced to the final on a walkover after TCU’s Pedro Vives withdrew prior the semifinal Saturday due to injury.
 
Klaassen and Tarvet were the first Toreros to ever reach the doubles final. Tarvet is not, however, the first Torero to make it to the tournament’s singles final. 2022 USD alum and current pro August Holmgren fell in the 2021 title match to current world No. 13 Ben Shelton.
 
With their respective quarterfinal wins Friday Klaassen and Tarvet qualified for the NCAA Individual Championships, which are taking place Nov. 18-24 as opposed to the Spring for the first time.
 
On the way to the doubles championship match in Tulsa, Klaassen and Tarvet won each of their four matches in straight sets; over the third, sixth, 26^th and 72^nd-ranked doubles teams in the country no less. They won 49 of 74 games in those matches.
 
In June San Diego finished the team season ranked No. 19 nationally and won the WCC Championship for the eighth time in the last nine full seasons.
