One of Nebraska’s most promising young defensive backs is no longer with the Husker football team.
Sophomore cornerback Ethan Nation and several walk-on players are no longer listed on the Nebraska football roster, an update which comes during NU’s summer workout program.
Other players who went through spring camp but departed over the summer include running back Cole Ballard, punter Jacob Hohl, defensive back Javon Kinchen, running back Trevon Kinchen, kicker Spencer Pankratz and fullback Landon Ternus.
A 2023 scholarship signee with Nebraska, Nation appeared in two games on defense and worked as the team’s punt returner down the stretch last season. Special teams coordinator Ed Foley named Nation as one of his top returners again this spring, and the cornerback also had a strong Spring Game performance which included an interception.

Nation would have been one of several young defensive backs in contention for playing time this season — but he’ll instead be moving on. Nation will be able to enter the transfer portal if he chooses when it reopens in the fall.
A pair of walk-on specialists, Hohl and Pankratz’s departures will be smoothed over the presence of incoming freshman kicker Nico Ottomanelli and punter Kamdyn Koch. Javon and Trevon Kinchen joined the NU roster during the 2023 season and did not appear in a game, while Ballard and Ternus redshirted during their lone season with the program.
