Stetson Bennett had no shortage of memorable moments from his Georgia career. With every national championship, major victory and playoff moment, Bennett made his mark on Georgia. Recently, the former Bulldog joined the Unreserved with TJ Callaway podcast to discuss his favorite moments in the red and black.
Bennett’s favorite play had a frustrating buildup. The night before the game, Bennett’s phone rang repeatedly. A Tennessee fan leaked his number, and the Volunteers took advantage. Bennett said the opposing fan base called him “probably 1,000 times” and interrupted his nightly routine.
“I listen to white noise before every game and freaking couldn’t listen to it because I had to turn my phone off,” Bennett said.
Despite the distractions, the two-time national champion remained focused. He finished the game 17 for 25 with two touchdowns and no turnovers. Bennett also rushed for a touchdown and exhibited his flair afterwards.
Upon finding the end zone, Bennett brought his right hand towards his helmet in the shape of a cell phone. The celebration paid homage to the Tennessee fans that called him the night before.
“I told [tight end Brett Seither] if I score, I’m going to do the [celebration],” Bennett said. “And then we scored and I did it, and I felt really cool.”
The Volunteers also entered the matchup as the No. 1 team in the first week of the college football playoff rankings. Bennett said the status gave Georgia fans a little extra motivation.
“I think everybody was mad,” Bennett said. “The fans were mad. I mean, I know the team was mad. It was like the audacity of the Tennessee Volunteers to be ranked number one.”
Athens was amped up. Some Bulldog fans camped out at Myers Quad the night before the game, while others showed up at 5 a.m. Saturday morning for College Gameday. Over 93,000 then packed into Sanford Stadium to create a moment those in attendance will never forget.
The noise flustered Tennessee, as the Volunteers false started seven times in the game. The rain further energized the fan base, and Georgia rolled to a 27-13 victory.
“It was perfect,” Bennett said. “The perfect storm.”
