Fritz, who will climb to world No.7, added: “I played solid this week, but I played very within myself. I don’t think I at any point was, like: ‘Wow, I’m playing incredible’, or: ‘I’m playing out of my mind’. it is a great feeling to have gotten to this point, knowing that I’m playing well, but I’m playing very within myself, and I feel like it’s repeatable.”
But speaking on ESPN, four-time US Open champion John McEnroe said: “Taylor Fritz to me has maximized what he can do on the court. He has done a tremendous job improving himself.
“The guy with the biggest upside right now to me would be Ben Shelton. He is the guy, perhaps, who can learn from a tough loss to Tiafoe. A semi-finalist last year. He has got the ability to do some really big things. Tiafoe, maybe get a little bit fitter would help him. They are a lot closer than they have been, absolutely, in a long time.”
