American tennis player Danielle Collins was treated to a heavy rain of boos Thursday when she taunted the crowd after winning her Australian Open match.
Collins defeated Australian player Destanee Aiava in the second round of the tournament. Naturally, the crowd was on Aiava’s side throughout the duration of the match.
That being the case, Collins made sure to let the crowd have it when she scored the match point. The 31-year-old immediately did a Hulk Hogan-like gesture to show everyone she wanted to hear them. In response, the crowd booed her heavily. Collins then blew a kiss in response before meeting Aiava at the net and shaking her hand.
During a press conference after the match, Collins went full WWE heel when she explained why she enjoyed the crowd interaction so much.
“One of the greatest things about being a professional athlete is the people that don’t like you, and the people that hate you, they actually pay your bills,” Collins said. “It’s kind of a cool concept. Obviously, my professional career’s not gonna last forever; and so I just remind myself every day, like when I have that kind of stuff, they’re paying my bills. Every person that’s bought a ticket to come out here and heckle me or do what they do, it’s all going toward the Danielle Collins fund. So, yeah, bring it on. I love it.
“Me and my group of girlfriends, we love a five-star vacation; so I can guarantee you that check is gonna go towards our next five-star trip — hopefully to the Bahamas. We like boats. We like big boats. We like yachts… We’ll post about it and let you guys know how it goes.”
