One casting choice for American Sports Story: Aaron Hernandez is unusual for one very meta reason concerning an exchange between two characters that is sure to happen in the show. Although Josh Rivera leads the American Sports Story cast as the titular athlete, the show follows the exploits of other NFL players and coaches whose playing and personal journeys overlapped with Hernandez’s playing career. One of those people is college quarterback sensation Tim Tebow, but the actor who plays him in American Sports Story creates an issue.
Tebow is one of the most prolific college quarterbacks of all time. Although his professional career never lived up to the promise of his collegiate years, his time as a Florida Gator made it tough to deny his athletic prowess. As the University of Florida’s QB1, Tebow served not only as the team’s on-field leader but also away from the football field as well. However, in American Sports Story, his physical appearance will ultimately become a little confusing for football fans.
Tim Tebow is played by Patrick Schwarzenegger in American Sports Story, and while he’s great in the role, the actor looks very much like another NFL quarterback: seven-time Super Bowl champion, Tom Brady. In other scenarios, Schwarzenegger’s resemblance to Brady wouldn’t create an issue. In fact, the actor’s Gen V character is actually aided by looking so much like the former Patriots and Buccaneers player. Unfortunately, the real Tom Brady was a huge part of Aaron Hernandez’s story, as he served as the tight end’s quarterback throughout all three of Herndandez’s seasons in the NFL.

When Ross Jirgl’s version of Tom Brady makes his debut in American Sports Story and interacts with Schwarzenegger’s Tebow, the scenes will be incredibly mind-bending to watch. There will be an actor who looks like Tom Brady, talking to another actor playing Tom Brady, who looks less like Tom Brady than the actor playing Tim Tebow. Granted, Jirgl and Schwarzenegger probably won’t share that many seasons, but when they do, it’ll be a strange experience.
When Tebow’s Broncos played Brady’s Patriots in December 2011 (a game that ended 41-23 to the Patriots), the two quarterbacks could be heard exchanging words about Aaron Hernandez at the end of the game. Brady confirmed, “I’ve been trying to watch over Aaron“ but also that his new teammate was “a lot to handle.” With Tebow attempting to keep Hernandez out of trouble during their time in Florida, and then eventually Brady doing the same in New England, American Sports Story: Aaron Hernandez casting Schwarzenegger as the former foreshadows this eventual shifting of responsibility to the latter.
