After the match was one set all, Fritz seized control over Ruud. He put Ruud on his back foot constantly during the final two sets, thanks to deep, blazing groundstrokes.
Ruud’s level dipped in the final two sets, giving Fritz more looks on second serves to attack. After the match, Fritz said he was proud of not getting too frustrated, particularly after the first set, when Ruud outplayed him.
Fritz stayed with it and found a way to win in four sets, advancing to his second consecutive U.S. Open quarterfinal.
