The Jacksonville Jaguars teased the imminent unveiling of throwback uniforms with a video posted Tuesday on X.
In the video, close-up shots are shown of a jersey, and it seemingly features the Jags’ original teal, black and gold color scheme, as well as the full-bodied jaguar alternate logo they began using in their inaugural season of 1995:
The video also includes play-by-play calls involving iconic Jaguars players from the past, such as Mark Brunell, Rashean Mathis and Keenan McCardell.
Also included in the video is the date July 18, 2024, which suggests the throwback unis will officially be unveiled Thursday.
In 1995, the Jags entered the NFL as an expansion team along with the Carolina Panthers, and while they have yet to win or even reach a Super Bowl, they have grown into a storied franchise with plenty of history.
Jacksonville has eight playoff appearances and three trips to the AFC Championship Game to its credit, and much of that success came early in its existence.
The Jaguars remarkably reached the AFC Championship Game in only their second season in 1996, and they made a franchise-record four straight playoff appearances from 1996 to 1999.
That is a big reason why Jags and NFL fans hold so much reverence for their original uniforms, and why excitement is mounting for the big reveal.
While teal, black and gold have always been key parts of the Jaguars’ color palette, they ditched teal as the primary color for the home jerseys for a time before bringing it back in 2021.
Given the hugely positive response, unveiling throwback jerseys akin to the Jags’ original threads is a no-brainer decision for the franchise.
Jaguars fans are undoubtedly hopeful that the throwbacks will help the team capture some of the magic it had in its early days as well.
Over the past 16 seasons, the Jags have only reached the playoffs twice, including a trip to the AFC Divisional Round in 2022.
Expectations were high entering the 2023 campaign due largely to the continued development of quarterback Trevor Lawrence, but after starting the year 8-3, the Jaguars dropped five of their final six games to finish 9-8 and miss the playoffs.
Jacksonville’s attempt at a bounce-back campaign will begin in earnest on Sept. 8 when they face the Miami Dolphins on the road in their 2024 regular-season opener.
