The United States’ railway network, the largest in the world with a total length of 220,480 kilometers, is experiencing a surge in business travel and tourism. This expansive network, composed of both private and public railroads, provides a time-saving and efficient transportation option, contributing significantly to the growth of business travelers, conference attendees, and leisure tourists. The Acela Express is Amtrak’s high-speed rail service operating between Boston and Washington, D.C., covering a distance of approximately 457 miles. It is the fastest train in the United States, reaching speeds up to 150 mph. The route includes key stops in major cities such as New York, Philadelphia, and Baltimore, making it a crucial link for business travelers in the Northeast Corridor. Known for its efficiency, comfort, and reduced travel times,catering to both business and leisure passengers.
The US rail network’s operational route length of over 250,000 kilometers makes it the biggest globally, with freight lines constituting about 80% of the network and the passenger network covering around 35,000 kilometers. For business travelers, the railway system offers a reliable and efficient mode of transport, especially in major urban areas. Commuter rail services are particularly popular in East Coast cities, where they provide a convenient alternative to congested roads and crowded airports.
The tourism industry is massively benefiting from the extensive US railway network. Intercity passenger service, once a cornerstone of American travel, has seen a resurgence as tourists seek out more relaxed and scenic travel options. The convenience and comfort of train travel attract tourists, allowing them to reach various destinations quickly and efficiently.
In December 2023, U.S. heavy rail passengers completed around 218.5 million unlinked trips, an 8% increase from December 2022. This rise in ridership, following the sharp decline during the COVID-19 pandemic, reflects the growing preference for rail travel among both business and leisure travelers. The upward trend over the past three years indicates a steady recovery and growing confidence in rail travel.
The US railway transportation market was valued at $110.1 billion in 2023. Companies like Union Pacific Corporation play a crucial role in this market. Union Pacific, which operates a 50,000-kilometer network connecting 23 states in the western part of the country, announced a $3.4 billion investment plan for 2024. This investment aims to enhance safety, renew assets, and expand services, further supporting the growth of business travel and tourism.
In 2022, the United States topped global business travel expenditures, with spending reaching $421.1 billion USD and generating $119 billion in tax receipts. This spending supported 6 million jobs, accounting for 3.5% of total employment. The GBTA’s economic impact study revealed that every dollar spent on business travel produced $1.15 in net-new gross domestic product (GDP) for the U.S. economy. Job support from business travel included 38% in food services, 19% in accommodations, and 11% in transportation and warehousing. The study also provided profiles of U.S. business travelers, highlighting their characteristics, behavior, motivations, and spending habits.
According to the latest forecast from the GBTA, the United States is projected to remain a leading market for business travel spending in 2024. Although final data for 2023 is not yet available, the GBTA’s Global Business Travel Index™ (BTI) estimates that U.S. business travel spending in 2023 will be approximately 7% higher than in 2019, indicating a strong recovery for the sector. Globally, business travel spending is expected to exceed $1.5 trillion in 2024.
The top 15 states by business travel destination spending accounted for 65% of total U.S. business travel expenditures. These states, in order of spending, are:
California, New York, Florida, Texas, Georgia, Illinois, Colorado, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Washington, Arizona, North Carolina, Ohio, Nevada, Virginia,
California and New York led in business travel spending with $35.62 billion and $23.31 billion, respectively. Among the top 15 states, Nevada had the highest ratio of business travel spend to GDP, with $6 billion in business travel spend making up 3.2% of the state’s GDP.
With a population exceeding 341 million and an annual growth rate of 0.9%, the demand for passenger rail services is significant. The extensive rail infrastructure, covering over 140,000 miles of track, supports this demand. The network’s ability to provide quick and efficient travel options makes it an attractive choice for business travelers and tourists alike.
Plans are in place to build a 27,000-kilometer national high-speed rail system in four phases by 2030. The California high-speed rail project, the first of its kind in the US, is already well underway, with additional projects like the Midwest high-speed rail line, Texas high-speed rail, and the Northeast High-Speed Corridor also under development. These projects promise to further boost the efficiency and appeal of rail travel for business and tourism.
The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, enacted two years ago, authorized over one trillion dollars in federal spending on transportation, broadband access, clean water, and electrical grid improvements. This funding has enabled rail operators to upgrade their infrastructure and purchase new vehicles, ensuring a comprehensive modernization of the US passenger rail network. As a result, the American Public Transportation Association (APTA) reported that overall ridership had recovered to 79% of pre-pandemic levels by April 2024.
Amtrak, the government-backed provider of U.S. passenger-rail service, plays a crucial role in the country’s business travel and tourism sectors. With 26 regional and 15 long-distance routes, Amtrak covers a substantial portion of the United States and even includes a few stops in Canada. This extensive network offers a time-saving and efficient transportation option for both business travelers and tourists.
Amtrak’s Acela Express, the only high-speed route in its network, runs from Boston to Washington, D.C. with stops in New Haven, New York, Philadelphia, and Baltimore. The entire route takes about seven hours, while the New York-to-Washington segment takes around three hours. This high-speed service significantly reduces travel time for business professionals traveling along the busy Northeast Corridor.
In 2021, Amtrak introduced Amtrak Airo™, a state-of-the-art passenger train designed to enhance the travel experience. Amtrak ordered 73 Airo trains under a $7.3 billion investment plan to replace its aging fleet. These trains, set to be operational in 2026, will feature advanced design and world-class amenities, making intercity passenger rail even more efficient, convenient, and accessible. The Airo trains will reach speeds of up to 125 mph (201 km/h) and are expected to attract 1.5 million additional riders annually.
The investment plan also includes facility modifications and other upgrades to support the new Airo trains. These enhancements are part of Amtrak’s broader strategy to improve reliability and passenger experience. The new trains will operate across various Amtrak routes, including Northeast Regional, Empire Service, Virginia Services, Keystone Service, Downeaster, Cascades, Maple Leaf, and more. With remote monitoring and integrated digital diagnostics, the Airo trains promise increased reliability and seamless transitions between power sources, eliminating time-consuming locomotive swaps.
Brightline, a privately funded passenger rail service, has revolutionized travel in Florida. Connecting major urban centers like Miami, Fort Lauderdale, and West Palm Beach, Brightline offers a comfortable and efficient alternative to the state’s congested highways. Brightline’s success has spurred ambitious expansion plans, including a significant extension to Orlando. This expansion will transform travel between Florida’s major tourist destinations and business hubs, showcasing the potential for similar projects across the U.S.
The Alaska Railroad Corporation (ARRC) also contributes significantly to the U.S. rail travel landscape, especially in tourism. In 2023, ARRC transported 540,329 passengers. Despite the severe ridership reduction during the pandemic (32,069 passengers in 2020), there was a substantial recovery in 2022. ARRC offers year-round rail transportation, with daily services between Anchorage-Seward, Anchorage-Whittier, and Anchorage-Denali/Fairbanks during the peak season from mid-May to mid-September. In winter, trains operate primarily on weekends between Anchorage and Fairbanks.
The resurgence of rail travel in the U.S. is a testament to the growing preference for efficient and reliable transportation options. The investments and innovations in the rail sector are set to further boost business travel and tourism, positioning rail as a critical component of the country’s transportation infrastructure.
