The 43rd edition of the CFDA Fashion Awards is taking place tonight at the American Museum of Natural History, where once again, guests have gathered under the iconic blue whale to toast the best of American fashion. The evening is being hosted by Cynthia Erivo, wearing a custom Gap by Zac Posen look, keeping (or not) to the red-carpet method dressing she’s been doing in honor of her upcoming turn as Elphaba in Wicked. Raul Lopez for Luar is the evening’s first winner for American Accessory Designer of the year.
Other designers being honored tonight include Michael Kors, who is being presented with the Positive Change Award for his work with Watch Hunger Stop, God’s Love We Deliver, and United Nations World Food Programme; Stuart Vevers, who will receive the Amazon Innovation Award for his work with Coachtopia, the sub-brand he launched last year with a circularity and sustainability focus; Schiaparelli’s Daniel Roseberry, who will accept the International Designer Award; and Stephen Burrows, who dazzled the Paris fashion crowd at the Battle of Versailles in 1973, and is receiving the lifetime achievement award. The Cuban-American designer Isabel Toledo, who passed away from cancer in 2019, is not only being recognized with the Board of Directors Award, but the award is being renamed in her honor; and will be known henceforth as the Isabel Toledo Board of Directors Tribute.
Also recognized this evening is the photographer Annie Leibovitz, who will receive the Media Award in Honor of Eugenia Sheppard; while the Founder’s Award in Honor of Eleanor Lambert is going to Hamish Bowles, Vogue’s editor at large and the creative director at large at World of Interiors magazine. The incomparable singer-songwriter Erykah Badu is being crowned with this year’s Fashion Icon award.
