CARY, N.C. – The University of Pennsylvania women’s tennis successfully competed in the ITA All-American Championships. The Quakers sent six athletes to the Championships, the only Ivy League team to have that many, and sent three players into the main singles and doubles draws.
Eileen Wang, Gavriella Smith, Maya Urata, and Lara Stojanovski competed in the prequalifying brackets. Wang went 1-1 in singles with Smith and Urata going 0-2. As a doubles pair, Urata and Stanjovski went 0-1.
Sabine Rutlauka won both of her matches in the singles qualifying round, punching her ticket into the main draw where she went 2-2. During the main draw, Rutlauka faced some top-ranked ITA competition, her victories coming over #30 Jessica Alsola in three sets and #46 Petra Sedlackova in two.
Esha Velaga also was in the main draw and went 2-2. The sophomore also took down some big names in the ITA rankings, her wins coming in straight sets over #17 Kimmi Hince (UCLA) and Elana Yu (Duke). Velaga’s last match in the main draw was against the tournament’s top seed and winner of last year’s ITA All-American Championships, Texas A&M’s Mary Stoiana, and she took the Aggie to three sets before falling (6-2, 4-6, 6-3).
Velaga and Wang went 0-2 in doubles action in the main draw. In a three-set match, the duo went up against #35 Amelia Honer and Anna-Marie Weisheim
